One of the first practical questions learners ask when they start studying Chinese is: how do people actually type this? The writing system that takes years to write by hand — surely typing it requires some exotic specialised hardware or a system too complex to figure out quickly?
The reality is that typing Chinese is genuinely straightforward, and most learners can be typing basic Chinese sentences within an hour of setting up their device. More importantly, typing practice turns out to be a surprisingly useful learning activity in its own right — something most beginners don't anticipate but many experienced learners rely on.

The most common method for typing Chinese on computers and smartphones is pinyin input. The logic is simple: you type the romanised pronunciation of a word using a standard keyboard, and the input method editor (IME) — the software layer that converts your keystrokes into Chinese characters — presents you with a list of matching characters or words to choose from.
Type 'ni' and the IME might suggest 你 (nǐ, you), 逆 (nì, against), 泥 (ní, mud), and others. Type 'ni hao' and it will almost certainly suggest 你好 as the top result. Type a longer phrase like 'wo xihuan xue zhongwen' and a good IME will predict 我喜欢学中文 directly, since phrase-level prediction is now standard.
You do not need to type tone marks. The IME handles disambiguation through context and word frequency. In practice, after a brief adjustment period, most learners find that pinyin input is fast and natural — often faster than typing in their native language once they have built up the muscle memory.
iPhone and iPad: Go to Settings → General → Keyboard → Keyboards → Add New Keyboard. Select Chinese (Simplified) or Chinese (Traditional) depending on which script you are studying. For most Mandarin learners, Simplified is the right choice. Under Chinese (Simplified), select Pinyin. Once added, switch between keyboards using the globe icon on the keyboard. The pinyin keyboard lets you type romanised pronunciation and select from character suggestions above the keyboard.
Android: Go to Settings → General Management → Language and Input → On-Screen Keyboard → Manage Keyboards. Windows also has the full Sogou Input app available for download, which many users prefer over the built-in Microsoft Pinyin for its stronger phrase prediction.
Pinyin input is the dominant method for most Mandarin speakers under 50 and virtually all non-native learners. But it is worth knowing that other input methods exist.
Stroke input requires you to enter the strokes of a character in order — horizontal, vertical, left-falling, right-falling, and turning strokes each assigned to a key. This method is used by people who know what a character looks like but cannot remember its pronunciation. It is common among older users and sometimes appears on feature phone keypads. For learners, it is generally not worth learning except as a last resort.
Shape-based input methods — Cangjie and Wubi being the most significant — assign characters to keys based on their structural components rather than their pronunciation. Wubi can be very fast for expert users since it does not require any selection from a candidate list. However, the learning curve is steep, and for most learners, the investment is not justified when pinyin input is already fast and accurate.

If you type 'da jia hao' (大家好, hello everyone), a good IME will present this three-character phrase as a single prediction rather than forcing you to select each character individually. For learners, this phrase prediction is a useful tool for checking your memory of how words are written. If you think you know how to write a word — say, 'interesting' (有趣) — type the pinyin 'youqu' and see if the correct characters come up. If you are not sure whether a word is one character or two, typing it out and looking at what the IME suggests is informative. Beyond practical communication, typing Chinese turns out to be a genuinely useful study activity. Here is why.
First, typing forces character recall. When you type a pinyin sequence and the candidate list appears, you must identify the correct character from a list of homophones. This recognition task is subtly different from reading — it requires you to match pronunciation-to-character under time pressure, with similar-looking or similarly-sounding options visible as distractors. Regular typing practice builds rapid character recognition in a way that pure reading does not.
Second, typing reveals gaps in your writing knowledge. A word you understand perfectly when reading might not be retrievable when you need to type it — you know the meaning but cannot produce the pinyin. Pinyin input requires knowing the pronunciation of a character in order to type it. This is a limitation: if you have seen a character but don't know how to pronounce it, you cannot use pinyin input to look it up or type it.
For these situations, handwriting input is invaluable. Every major smartphone operating system supports touchscreen handwriting input for Chinese — you draw the character with your finger and the IME recognises it. The recognition is surprisingly accurate even for imperfect or partially-remembered characters, making it a practical tool for quickly looking up or typing characters whose pronunciation you don't yet know.
On iPhone, within the Chinese Simplified keyboard, press and hold the keyboard selection button and choose the handwriting option. On Android with Gboard, switch to the handwriting panel similarly. On Mac and Windows, handwriting input modes are available through the same input source settings used for pinyin.
Handwriting input is also useful for learners who want to practise character writing without a physical pen — drawing characters on the touchscreen engages the same motor memory as physical writing, and the immediate feedback of seeing whether the software recognised your character correctly is genuinely useful.
A few mistakes come up repeatedly among new Chinese typers that are worth knowing about in advance.
Typing full syllables when abbreviations work. On most IMEs, you can type just the initial consonant of each syllable for common phrases. 'zgr' for 中国人, 'wmxx' for 我们学校 — the IME infers the full phrase from the consonant skeleton. This is much faster than typing complete pinyin for frequently used phrases once you are comfortable with the system.
Not using the space bar correctly. On many IMEs, pressing space confirms the top candidate and moves on. Learners sometimes press space out of typing habit between each pinyin syllable, which breaks the phrase-prediction context and forces character-by-character selection. Let the IME build up a multi-syllable prediction before selecting.
Ignoring the personal dictionary. Most IMEs let you save frequently used proper nouns, names, and specialised vocabulary to a personal dictionary for instant prediction. If you regularly type the names of people, places, or characters from the stories you are reading, adding them takes ten seconds and saves time every time you type them.
Defaulting to character input when word input is available. Many beginners type one syllable at a time and select each character individually rather than typing multiple syllables and letting the IME predict the whole word or phrase. Phrase-level input is faster and produces fewer errors — practise building up to multi-syllable sequences from early on.
One effective way to integrate typing into vocabulary study is to type out example sentences for new vocabulary rather than just reviewing flashcards. After reading a story — like the Beijing morning story — pick three to five sentences that contain vocabulary you want to remember. Close the story and try to type those sentences from memory in a notes app. The IME candidate list gives you immediate feedback: if the characters you expected appear as predictions, you have the right pronunciation; if the predicted characters don't match what you intended, you have exposed a gap.
This sentence-typing practice takes five to ten minutes after a reading session and produces substantially more active encoding than re-reading the same text. For learners working through graded Chinese stories, adding a brief typing component to each reading session closes the loop between recognition (reading) and production (typing). You do not need to type extensively — ten minutes of sentence composition after a reading session is sufficient to engage the productive encoding that makes vocabulary stick.
As your reading level advances — from the HSK 1 stories through to the more complex narratives at HSK 4 and 5 — the typing practice advances with it.
