Actions in progress with 在 (zài) / 正在 (zhèngzài) Many learners use 在 and 正在 to say someone is doing something right now. They are similar, but 正在 is a little stronger and often used to emphasise the action is ongoing. 在 is more flexible and appears in location descriptions as well as progressive sentences. Basic structure [Subject] + 在/正在 + Verb (+ Object) Examples 1. 我在吃饭 wǒ zài chīfàn I am eating (food). - Here 在 + verb shows the action is in progress. 2. 他正在学习汉语 Tā zhèngzài xuéxí Hànyǔ He is studying Chinese (right now). - 正在 adds emphasis that the studying is happening at this moment. 3. 她在学校。 Tā zài xuéxiào.
